Marquis de Lafayette (1757 - 1834), a french aristrocrat, philanthropist and humanist, was an invaluable fighter for civil rights and the charter of liberties in France. When he and Thomas Jefferson met, they felt a deep respect for each other.
After the Declaration of Independance was made, Lafayette committed himself to serve the colonies, what he successfully did.
Thomas Jefferson later wrote to Lafayette, "Wherever I am, or ever shall be, I shall be sincere in my friendship to you ....”
Jefferson summarized Lafayette's contributions to the American Revolution: "When I was stationed in his country for the purpose of cementing its friendship with ours, and of advancing our mutual interests, this friend of both was my most powerful auxiliary and advocate.
